Two online business myths new solopreneurs believe.
Depending on your natural levels of confidence, you believe one of two things:
That building an online business is too difficult.
That making money online is easy — everybody does it!
Here’s how these beliefs can mess you up & how to deal with them.
Building an online business is too difficult.
If you feel like:
You don’t have anything that great to offer.
You don’t know how to grow your audience online.
You don’t know what you want to talk about online: you have multiple interests that are too different.
You think you’re supposed to “teach” something and have nothing.
You write but don’t publish.
You’re selling things, but no one buys them, and honestly, you’re not surprised.
You’ve lost your enthusiasm (don’t worry — it’s just because you’re not doing what you really want to do).
Then, you fall into the group of people who believe building an online business is too hard.
The problem? Lack of confidence. No, no. It is a lack of confidence.
I know you think it’s really a lack of knowledge or experience or that you’re too different for this to work (for whatever reason).
But really, it is a lack of confidence.
You keep beating yourself up instead of lifting yourself up — and no wonder someone who’s beaten up finds it difficult to start & grow a business.
Solution:
You’re listening to the wrong voice.
There are always two (or more) sides of the coin. You’re staring at the one that says, “This shit is difficult, and I’m not good enough.”
On some level, that might be true. It’s certainly not easy to build an online business. It requires many skills, and maybe you don’t have some of them.
But here are a few more truths for you:
There are a lot of people who have built successful businesses online. Some of them have had it harder than you.
All of these people felt like they couldn’t at a certain point. Yet, they did — and they often share exactly how they did it.
All of the skills that you need to build a business are available online.
You have achieved hard things before.
You can choose which of your inner voices to focus on.
How about those truths?
Making money online is easy.
You just have to find the right platform, the right “hack”, the right opportunity at the right time, and boom. Millions.
Hello, shiny object syndrome!
You’re not building a business, dude. You’re playing the lottery.
You look for a big hit, and if you find it, you’ll consider turning it into a business.
That’s why you’re not sure what you want to do— you haven’t found the big hit yet.
Stop asking, “How do I make money online?”
When you look for a job, you don’t ask, “How do I make money on the job market?”
If you were to build a brick-and-mortar business, you wouldn’t start with the question, “How do I make money?” You wouldn’t, because the answer is fairly obvious. Offer a good product, make sure a lot of people know about it, and optimize expenses and operations. Done!
Don’t “make money online”. Build a business online.
I thought about online business the wrong way for many years. I wanted to know how to make money on Fiverr, or on Medium, or on Substack.
Now I know the right question is, “How do I build an awesome business online?” It’s not about one platform or one hack. It’s about offering something good and then letting people know.
Solution:
Stop thinking about platforms and start thinking about your core offer.
