These days, I’m learning that you make more money when you give up control.
I’ve always been like, well, why start writing on this platform if I’m not going to keep it up?
Why start a newsletter if I can’t deliver 2 times a week?
Why post on X (former Twitter) if I can’t write 20 threads per day?
What if I start and stop? Wouldn’t it be a waste of time?
These days, I just have fun.
I mean, I have my priorities. Minimum of 4 articles per week on Medium and 2 newsletters here.
But other than that, I’ve allowed myself to be everywhere and do anything I find fun.
I’ve also decided to be brave about my goals.
$500K per year. That’s the goal. Not the milestone, the goal.
I think it’s an excellent optimal goal for a one-person business. Growth is not always a good thing. No need to make millions. No need to outgrow this amazing business I have.
So, Maya, you’ll ask, how on Earth will you make $500K per year? Like, where will the money come from?
Here’s my answer: I don’t know.
For now, I have these rough ideas:
$50k per year from copywriting clients
$50k per year on Medium
$10k per year on Substack
$20k per year on digital products/ebooks
$20k per year from selling coaching services & writing support
But that’s totaling only $150k. “Only” $150K.
Yet, I’m happy with that. It’s a great plan. My $150K plan is actually a great $500K plan.
Why?
Because you can’t plan for everything, and you shouldn’t.
Remember when you were a kid?
Did you plan to draw? To sing? To play?
You know how there are some people who don’t plan, yet great things just happen to them? That was young me. I’d write an opinion for a teen newspaper just because. They’d publish it and send me money. I’d post a gig on Fiverr; people would buy it and send me money.
I’m sure you know others. Maybe you were one?
It’s not just the law of attraction. These people put themselves out there as positive doers. They spread this amazing energy. It’s contagious. Opportunities like contagious energy.
I used to be like that. Then I lost it. It got buried under rational thought, plans, and to-do lists.
Now, I want to be like that again. It’s how I want to make money. I want it to be fun. I want to give it all I got, try all the options, and see what works best.
Don’t you want to have fun?
Just write your heart out? Try anything? Start selling that offer you’ve been thinking about for ages?
It’s time we find the best of both worlds. Have rough guidelines, a few priorities, and then let yourself be.
Because the moment you put your writing on a to-do list, it’s not fun anymore. It’s a job.
And sure, it is a job. You need to show up consistently and do it.
But you can show up because you want to, not because you have to.
Don’t you want to?
I hope this makes sense.
My plan to make $500K per year as a writer (hopefully by 2025, but who knows) is to have a lot of fun writing anything. Working with the clients I like. Creating digital products I’m proud of.
What’s your plan to achieve your goals? Does it make you excited to wake up?
Make sure it does!
Sending you tons of unstoppable positive energy,
Maya
