Doing something just for the practice of failing was one of the best pieces of advice i've gotten. We get so bogged down by the paralysis of fear of failing that we forget that - that's the whole point. You have to fail to succeed, so you might as well fail faster.
Absolutely. First time I heard it was my sales training when I started in a call center. Take a 100 calls, fail 100 times. Somehow, on the 30th call, you get a yes. 👍🫶
Oh how I have been there many times. This is so relatable and I am sure it is for many others. I recently was in a mastermind call around building community and the guest presenter talked about how they send 3 emails a week. I was honestly surprised by that but as he explained it made sense. There was a super clear process around when he sent and why he sent. For example one of the three was to promote his weekly podcast. Ok that makes sense. Then the other two are on specific days and tend to cover specific things on those days. He has a plan! I know how shocking. He has a process. 😱 Who does that? Oh I know. Successful people. Ha! He also shared with us the big peaks and valleys he sees with his large list. Told us to stop the focus on the numbers because he even sees crazy swings and he has been doing a consistent newsletter for over 10 years. Easier said than done I think for new newsletter writers but it was good to see his actual stats and not just be told something.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I've said it ever since I've been on substack even before I came to Substack- don't subscribe just to subscribe you don't want my stuff please don't. And when I send emails out and they're normally not promotions they're usually information and things to help people I get unsubscribes and I want you to know I clap and Celebrate every single time. I think I have around 1080 something right now but the thing is there's not that many willing to put forth any money at all to get all the paid content and the price for the value is insane. so I really raised my prices when I looked at the value still crickets so what I've decided I'm gonna do is pull off my paid content and sell it separately and they're gonna pay much higher for it than they would if they joined as a paid subscriber and just leave some of the free stuff here for a really cheap price. I'm also pivoting back to a platform I was on before and have about 150 subscribers and it takes a while to get monetized but it's just a platform I used to drive people to other places. So yeah, I 1000% agree with this. And if people don't like it, then they don't like it, and they can unsubscribe.
I've always said all I want is true fans and true fans who believe in us support us with their pockets. Hell they go buy $500- $900 courses about learning how to do a note better or article but they won't pay for their health and wellness. They'll find out soon enough when they're savings and checking account empties, and they lose their inheritance and their property due to some illness or disease that could've been prevented. That may sound extreme, but I've seen it happen hundreds of times. Thanks, Maya 🙏
I’ve been thinking about how we can improve your rate of monetization and that’s exactly the type of thing you should be doing: more education on the problem; much more. People don’t understand they have a problem; they often think health is the absence of a serious disease. Then of course serious diseases happen. Lean into the problem more and then sell, that might do wonders. 🫶
i'm learning a great deal about digital content and marketing courses and the way people are doing it. They're going out at all wrong not everybody but what I've learned is a game changer and I can't wait to start playing it. I have everything ready. It's just with what happened with my stepfather on Wednesday and dealing with Mom. I just need some time to implement it.
“Stop waiting for them to give you permission to grow” That line alone is worth printing out. That’s the kind of tough love every creator needs. It’s wild how fear of losing a few disengaged people keeps us from showing up for the ones who actually care.
God this is good Maya. It's like you're in my head (thinking my thoughts). Wow. Shifting to "this isn't for you" (something I heard Seth Godin say) is challenging but also where I want to get to (or be). Thank you for this. What a great way to start a Monday.

Absolutely wild, but that’s psychology for you. We all need to be liked, accepted, even when it doesn’t serve us.
Yup. Do your thing and let ‘em watch. Your people will lean in to learn more and not-your-people will move on to find what they need.
