We all love subscribers, but we can’t eat them.
If you’re happy to see likes, followers and subscribers go up but still aren’t making any/decent money, you’re probably thinking…
I’ll figure it out later
I’ll sell when I have a product
I’ll turn on paid when I figure out my paid strategy
I’ll just paywall and someone, at least, must go paid.
Unfortunately, this attitude is pretty fucking common, and I want you to stop it right now!
I blame the “just write” advice.
The “just write” advice teaches us that if we just write, and we’re consistent, we’ll be successful.
Unfortunately, that advice only works in the very beginning. If you’ve been writing & publishing on the Internet at least 2x per month for 6 months, you’re all done with the “just write” stuff. You’ve “just written” enough to start optimizing for attention and, even more importantly, to start selling.
To tell someone who wants to be a professional writer to “just write” is like telling someone who wants to be an Olympic athlete to “just run.”
Here’s how I sell.
I sell before I’m ready.
And I mean that quite literally. I often start selling my products before they’re ready, announcing a pre-launch price. I’ve sold over 30 units of products before they were ready.
I sell with every e-mail.
It’s always about value first. But then, it’s about selling. I get paid subscribers from every e-mail, and you can, too.
I sell 3 types of offers.
You should always have 3 types of offers to sell: free or cheap; average price; premium. The big money is always in the average-priced offer. However, optimize sales by building at least one of each.
I sell one at a time.
Just because you have a bunch of things to sell, doesn’t mean you should sell them all at the same time. In every e-mail, I sell one specific thing that’s perfect for the ideal reader of that e-mail.
I sell high-ticket services on sales calls.
It’s a 3-sell strategy: you invite people on a sales call (which is a sale on its own); you spend the first call learning more about the client and saying very little about yourself; you spend the second call presenting a bespoke offer along with pricing and timeframe.
Monetize, monetize, monetize.
We all like attention and likes, and we LOVE subscribers: but if you don’t make money from any of it, it’s a hobby, not a business.
Your monetization strategy will evolve with time. You’ll get better at selling & providing value. But to get there, you need to start and keep going.
As with anything, practice makes perfect.

I thought you were going to say premium was the most profitable, but makes sense that average can outperform due to volume
