It’s a bold statement, saying just one thing is key to making the big bucks.
Obviously, making six figures online requires multiple skills.
But here’s what I discovered: many freelancers who have more skills than I do fail to get the money they deserve.
Well, not on my watch.
Last year was my first ever 6-figure year, and it taught me something dead-simple: people love it when you overdeliver.
You’ve experienced it first hand, I’m sure: the complimentary bread in a restaurant, the delivery that takes three days instead of five, the silent Uber driver.
When you overdeliver, people are happy to tip you, recommend you and become clients for life.
Easier said than done, right? How to overdeliver as an already stretched, rather affordable freelancer?
Here are a few things I’ve done that have worked wonders.
I offered meetings. Most freelancers avoid meetings, but the reality is they can transform your business. They make you more trustworthy, help you upsell & cross-sell, decrease revision requests and justify a higher price.
I put my web copy in mock-ups (basic black & white web design). To be fair, my husband does the mock-ups, but I would be happy to pay someone else to do them.
I check the subject lines of e-mail projects with a special subject lines tester and send the results to clients.
I try to deliver a day sooner than agreed.
I send clients links to articles I’ve written that I think would help their business.
I offer a delayed revision—they have up to a month to test their copy and get back to me if they don't like the results.
After a coaching session, I’ll send a summary and add one of the quizzes I’ve developed or recommend a relevant book/more resources.
You don’t have to do all of those things. Maybe half of them aren’t relevant to what you do.
But if I were you, I’d create a list of “Ways to overdeliver” and use whatever I can.
Obviously, these need to be things that come easily to you. We’re looking for ways to offer value without wasting too much of your precious time.
And that’s it. When I started doing that, I got more positive reviews, more tips, and more return clients than ever.
Not to mention my average order value jumped from $200 to almost $300 within a few months.
I’m curious to know if you’re currently freelancing? Or are you focusing on content creation?
Let me know in the comments so I can make my e-mails as helpful as possible.
Wishing you more money than you can spend,
Maya
