Why I gave up a project worth $50K
Plus a LinkedIn mini success after just 3 weeks on the platform.
I decided to work from a co-working space today for the first time in forever, and it rains so much that a few suburbs are in a State of Emergency.
Christ! You leave the house for a day, and all hell breaks loose. I’m not even sure how I’m going to go back home.
Hopefully, the rain will stop soon.
Back on topic.
You may be noticing that I’m playing around with the format of this newsletter.
It’s only because I want you to make the best of it. Feel free to give me feedback.
Today, since I couldn’t choose just one thing to write about, I’ll tell you all 3 things on my mind.
Why I gave up a 50K project.
I recently declined an ongoing project worth $50K.
I felt myself wince after the meeting. It just wasn't my thing.
Anytime you feel resistance, it's because you're trying to be something other than yourself.
That's not always a bad thing.
The question is, are you trying to be a better version of yourself? If that's the case, push through.
Or are you trying to be someone else? If that's the case, take a step back, regardless of the potential benefits.
You'll never have your dream career/business if you take detours that take you in the other direction.
Of course, I was so confident in saying no because I'd made the mistake of saying yes many times before. Glad I finally learned that lesson!
There's too much at stake when you're a solopreneur, and you must be very careful about where you invest your time & energy.
I’m aware I declined a lot of money. However, it's "difficult" money.
I'm not suggesting money ever comes easy, but sometimes money feels easier because it's the result of work that interests you.
Then there's money that slowly makes you hate your life. We all must know ourselves enough to recognize and avoid this type of money.
From cringe to excitement: I’m trying affiliate marketing for the first time.
Raise a hand if affiliate marketing has ever made you cringe.
I didn’t get it, you know? It felt like an MLM marketing scheme, after which all my friends would start avoiding me.
But recently, I recommended two great courses to my Medium followers, and a few people bought them.
And I thought, hm! What if, as an affiliate, I don’t try to sell anything and everything—because affiliate marketing wouldn’t be my primary source of income anyway—but instead, I showcase products & people I like?
If it’s cool to do it for free, why not make a little bit of money out of it?
Plus, I sometimes feel so jealous of the digital products others create. Some are so great, I’m like, URGH, I should’ve made that!
Affiliate marketing is a great way to reframe this. Instead of feeling jealous, I can support those awesome creators and make some money in the process. It comes at no extra cost to the end client, either.
Do you see a downside other than the fact it plays on our collective fear of selling?
It’s a total win-win.
Two reasons I’m sharing that.
Don’t give up on the idea of affiliate marketing. Just don’t push products with the only intention of making money.
I’ll start recommending more creators and products I honestly think are great. Keep in mind that if you choose to purchase anything, I’ll get a small commission.
LinkedIn Mini Success
A few weeks ago, I shared my LinkedIn story & strategy and why I think LinkedIn is a great social media platform for solopreneurs. You can read that post here.
Today, I want to share a LinkedIn mini-success. After showing up on the platform for just three weeks, with none of my posts gone viral or even remotely popular, a potential client contacted me yesterday.
How cool is that? And way faster than I thought.
In short, the opportunity is definitely there, so go for it.
While I’m not a LinkedIn expert, I have a straightforward, non-overwhelming approach to the platform that works, so feel free to ask me any questions in the comments section.
Thanks for reading & supporting my work!
