I know there’s a horrible thought that creeps up on you sometimes.
As you’re dealing with yet another rejection or, even worse, as you realize you haven’t dealt with rejection because you haven’t even tried.
Sometimes, you think it even when things are working out. Because what if you get excited for a moment, and then everything shoots to hell?
That’s when it appears.
I’m not good enough.
For the money I want. For the career I want. For the life I want.
Let me explain exactly how I know for sure you are good enough for everything you want.
Secret to Success: We can all have everything
In competitions, we can’t. In life, we can.
We can all have the money we need. There are $40 trillion in circulation in the world.
We can all have the careers we want.
We can all learn anything we want to know.
We can all access psychological tools to handle the demons in our minds.
Everything you need to achieve any goal is available to you. You just haven’t approached it the right way yet.
How to approach it:
Anytime I feel bad about achieving a goal, I catch myself thinking ten steps ahead.
I can’t monetise X. I have 100 followers!
I can’t write a great novel; look at my first draft!
My brain is in a hurry to have everything now. Immediately.
Anxiety is a bad advisor.
Forget the end goal and focus on the next step.
When we dream of things we’ve never achieved, and never seen anyone around us achieve, the end goal can be brutally overwhelming.
Maybe I won’t write a great novel, but I can take the next step in editing. I can start showing up on X and slowly gain the followers and impressions I need.
I can take the next step in my online business: research great newsletters, brainstorm article ideas, think through digital product ideas.
Maybe some days, I will fail to take the next steps. Perhaps some days, I’ll stay where I am or even move backwards.
The beauty is we don’t become what we do some days. We become what we do most days. I know you’re good enough because I know you can take the next step most days.
Find & trust the process:
Achieving a goal isn’t about who you are. What it takes isn’t a better you. What it takes is a better process.
Better systems. Better plans you can follow that will take you there.
Find the process (through learning & testing), then trust that process, even if nothing happens for a while.
I know you’re good enough to go through the process and give it time.
Peek Behind The Curtain
Recent success:
The long-form articles are working, people. I use Michael Simmons’ structure that I explained here. I’ve only had 2 long-form stories published so far, both in the last 5 days. They’ve had 200+ views and keep going strong. They’re definitely performing better than most of my other articles.
Recent failure:
My last newsletter only got a 42% open rate. I always aim for at least 50%, so that was a slap in the face. The good kind, though! It’s telling me something I need to know to be able to serve you better. :)
Something new I’m trying:
I have a confession to make. In May, I promised myself I’d pitch an article to a big publication —Forbes, Business Insider, Fast Company—at least once a week. I made a promise to myself that I’d have an article in one of those publications by the end of the year.
Well, I haven’t sent anything in since August. Eek!
I’m feeling better about myself lately, though. I’m seeing some traction online, and I have an idea for a pitch, so fingers crossed.
What were your promises to yourself this year? You still have a little bit of time to try and make them happen—and I’d be happy to help. Just respond to this e-mail and let me know what’s happening in your beautiful head.
Remember, you’re f*cking awesome! (No matter what your confused brain is telling you)
Love,
Maya
Thx Maya,
I really needed this little 'wake-up' call.
Focus on the positive. Keep the endless pressure as low as possible. We're trying and that's A LOT!
Thx for being so open about your own struggle. If not this year, I'm sure you'll send out articles to those publications next year! All the best! X
Really love the article and the "peek behind curtain" reflections! Thanks!
