thank you for this post - very informative and thought provoking as always. Do you think the 1% response rate to your 1000 cold emails is average or below average or above average ? Just trying to understand what you would benchmark. Thank you
Hi, Kevan! 1% is about the industry average, according to HubSpot. However, I am planning to follow up with everyone but the people who requested that we don’t send them more e-mails, so let’s see if we can get this up.
Thanks - good to know. Years ago, the credit card industry used to send cold emails out eight times before the return was less than the cost of doing so. Maybe you have some stats on the value of sending the same email to non responders a second and third etc time ? And the gap between each email ? Sorry for asking so many questions !
Our secret is our only cost was time as we sent this out manually. The downside is it takes time (but my client had an intern in his company do it, took her 4-5 days, and she had other tasks, too) and you don't have the stats. On the plus side, much more of our e-mails have landed in clients inboxes as opposed to spam boxes + we could personalize parts of the message. Plus, we cut the costs of sending through an e-mail marketing solution. We plan on following up the same way, now that we've updated our list with a few bounces (unexisting e-mail), the positive responses and the negative responses ("please, don't e-mail me again"). It should take even less time.
Thank you for writing this article. I have been trying to figure out my skills as a solo act in the freelance world.
After reading what feels like reading countless articles and books on my journey to self-discovery, I came across your post.
It was readable, concise, and made an impact on me. I know what I can contribute and better understand where to market my service skills.
Figuring out the (why) (when) and (how) are factors I need to evaluate to stay on message.
Thank you again
I enjoyed the read and getting the month of May 2024 off to a positive start

Not at all, happy to talk to a fellow marketer!

Personalisation is a good idea and in my experience increases response rates
