Interesting. I'm afraid I'm choosing "too long" ideas in the first place. Even with lots of editing I can't cut them down enough

You are right about focusing on a single or a few publications. Editors start recognizing your name.

Smaller pubs also increase the chance to get some feedback. And also to get Boosted, if the editor is a nominator. (Though I know you don't write to get Boosted)

How do you select your ideas?

Mostly, I listen to my gut. Most of the stories that I know will do well end up doing well. But if I’m out of ideas, I look at the data. I see the articles that are doing well and dive into sections of that.

How do you make sure to keep articles short? I feel that's a major obstacle for me.

lol, we’ll, it has been a while. About keeping short: Editing. And that’s something I struggle with, too. I’m not just talking copy editing, I’m talking developmental and structural editing. Sometimes entire paragraphs and sections go if I feel they’re not necessary for me to make my point.
