Writing is the easiest way to attract attention and create an audience.
(If you missed the last post, we discussed why you should always work for an audience first.)
Even though it seems everyone is talking TikTok and YouTube these days, there are multiple platforms that support (and even prefer) writers.
Medium
Twitter
LinkedIn
Substack
Guest posting opportunities (slightly different, to be discussed soon)
If you have no following on either of these platforms, I’d recommend you start with either LinkedIn or Medium. The reason is they support long-form content, and you have a lot less competition in long-form content. Anyone can share a tweet; not anyone can create a good 1000-word article.
Now, say you started writing. Say you’re writing regularly. How do your readers transform into money in your bank account?
You start an e-mail list of potential customers & clients. A few posts are coming on that topic: the how, the why, and the what. I promise I’ll make this as simple as I can.
But for now, I’m using this post to remind you. Start an e-mail list. It’s crucial, and it’s fun.
What if you’re “doing it all already, but I am not getting anywhere?”
Someone posted that question on FB a few days ago. In fact, I think they’re on this list already. Hello and welcome!
I thought it would be good to address this because, for some of you, the potential of “wasting time” trying these things just to see them flop is what’s keeping you from starting.
So let’s touch on something important: the what.
I’ll never get tired of saying this: good marketing is about the what, not the how.
The what doesn’t need gazillion distribution channels to shine.
Here’s what to do if you’re trying but nothing is happening:
Scale it back. One or two platforms max. Overwhelm won’t get you anywhere good.
Dig deep and see how you can become one of the top people on those platforms. All platforms have their specifics.
Focus on finding your “what.” You can learn how to do that here.
In short, stop going wide and go deep. That’s where the money is.
